One of the ways that I beat the heat during summer is by using my essential oils. You’ve probably heard about the benefits of aromatherapy and I’ve found that certain scents definitely help me cope a little better with the heat this time of the year. There’s a shop in my town that makes their own organic essential oils. Since they’re willing to do custom blends on the spot, it’s my favorite place to shop! I like to mix a couple of spray bottles using distilled water and a few drops of my favorite cooling scents. I store them in the refrigerator so that the mixture will be nice and cool when I want to mist myself down.
In the morning, I like to use a peppermint mixture and in the evening I tend to use a citrus scent. You can combine scents, if you like, as well. Sometimes even taking a sniff is enough to wake me up out of a heat-induced funk. And there’s nothing more refreshing than a cool mist before bed or when I first wake up. Depending on your sensitivity, you should use whichever oil smells right to you. Anything in the mint family can be a little strong or perhaps too refreshing. However, I know plenty of people who like to add a few drops of peppermint oil to their shower in the morning. Either way, you’ll want to take a whiff of a few scents before deciding what’s right for you.
Of course, you also want to take certain precautions with essential oils. Some aren’t meant to be used on the skin without a carrier oil and others may just plain irritate you. So, it’s best to do a little research first. And don’t forget to have fun! If you find an amazing blend, let us know in the comments!
