Makeup Basket: Valentine’s Day 2015 Special Edition

Makeup-Basket-Wednesdays

I missed both December and January Makeup Basket Wednesdays; I’m sorry. I was sick a large portion of those months and wore more tissues than makeup. So, I thought I would do a special Valentine’s Day edition instead. Enjoy!

Review: Real Techniques Bold Metals Brushes

Real Techniques Bold Metals Brushes

Real Techniques Bold Metals Brushes

I bought my first makeup brushes from Real Techniques last month sort of by accident. I was minding my own business, dutifully deep cleansing my makeup brushes, when my foundation brush went wonky. Well, actually, it sort of fell apart in my hands. You know how people tell you not to allow water to get down inside the farrow of your brush because it can damage the glue holding the bristles in place? I can confirm that this a fact. I’d had the same paddle foundation brush from MAC for nearly ten years. I would likely still have it if I had been more careful during its first washings years ago.

After seeing a few reviews of the Real Techniques Bold Metals 101 Triangle Foundation Brush, I decided that I might as well check it out while at Ulta. To be honest, I know some people really don’t like the look of these brushes but I love them. They look great sitting together in a clear glass holder though they do collect fingerprints rather easily, which is kind of expected given the reflective material. Anyway– it was the shape of the brush that first intrigued me because it’s my own habit to apply a very thin layer of foundation over my eyelids and I was curious to see if the triangle shape would make blending in the corner of my eye easier. I also liked the idea of using it to blend a little  more seamlessly around my nose.

As far as blending goes, this brush works for me. The tapering of the bristles can be a bit rougher than what I’m used to, because of its shape, at certain angles but I’ve worked that out, and the finish this brush gives is gorgeous. I was so pleased with it that I went back to get two additional brushes.

The Bold Metals 301 Flat Contour Brush works great for how I use it, on the occasions when I want to contour, which is along the sides of my nose and just under my cheekbones. I’ll be honest, I don’t contour very often but so far I’ve had great experiences with both application and blending.

The Bold Metals 300 Tapered Blush Brush was my other purchase from this collection and it’s much small than what I’m used to, which is exactly why I bought it. There are days when I can get a little carried away with my blush. Look, before you say anything– I am one of those people with a neutral skin tone. For me, that translates to the color of my skin being extremely flat and one dimensional all over the face. Because I’ve avoided sun exposure for a very long time, I’m also on the pale side. So, abusing blush is something I have a hard time avoiding while trying to get what I think is a “healthy glow.” The smaller size of this brush is meant to allow for greater placement detail and control in application; so, yes, it’s exactly what I need to keep from ending up with two rather unflattering patches of bright plum on my cheeks.

All three of the brushes have a good heft to them and feel good in my hand, which makes me think that the handles may have been balanced or weighted for comfort and ease of use. The bristles are all synthetic which is great for cleaning, among other concerns. Overall, I’m very happy with my purchases from the line and may go back to grab the brushes from the eye collection next. And, since I know more about brush care as an adult than I did when I was younger, these should last a while.

My Foray into Facial Oils: the Highs and Lows of Searching for Balanced Winter-Time Skin

Face & Neck Oils (L-R): Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil, Yes to Blueberries Age Refresh Face and Neck Oil, Caudalie Divine Oil, tarte Pure Maracuja Oil

Face & Neck Oils (L-R): Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil, Yes to Blueberries Age Refresh Face and Neck Oil, Caudalie Divine Oil, tarte Pure Maracuja Oil

I feel like all I post about is dry skin or lips these days. In my defense, it is winter and I’ve been subjected to a ton of super-drying indoor heating systems for months. You, too? While I am grateful that warmth is an option during these chilly days, my skin has started up its usual winter-time protest by flaking and itching, and my cheeks are suffering the worst of it.

I knew that a face oil would be a great option since it should, in theory, help balance oil production. So I’ve been trying out a variety of oils with varying results for the last few months and am eager to share my experiences with you.

FYI: My skin is sensitive, acne-prone and combination type, with intermittent oil flares in my t-zone and dryness everywhere else. I only applied these oils in the evening, during my usual nighttime skincare routine. During the day, I stuck with my moisturizer/SPF combo.

Caudalie: Divine Oil
I need to get this out of the way first– Caudalie’s Divine Oil gave me a small break out. I don’t know if it was from the combination of oils used to create the formula itself or the ingredients used to create the oil’s fragrance. Yes, this oil does indeed smell divine, as the name would imply, but fragrance isn’t something I really desire in skincare products, as most ingredients intended for fragrance can themselves be irritating. For sensitive skin, a fragrance this strong, but admittedly delicious, is a no-no.

My skin is moderately sensitive and definitely didn’t like something in this product. Most people tend to use this as a body oil, and as a body moisturizer I can see why it gets such great reviews. But I will be completely honest with you: while I like Caudalie as a brand and use more than one of their products regularly, if something irritates the skin on my face, then I am not comfortable using it anywhere else on my body as our skin works as one huge organ.

So, I’m going to give this oil a shot on the ends of my hair which will allow me to enjoy the fragrance without any of the irritation.

tarte: Pure Maracuja Oil
It is hard for me to articulate exactly how much I dislike the rollerball on this product. I realize that you can buy the larger version sans rollerball, but I wanted to try a smaller size first, and I’m glad that I did. And, as you can see in the picture above, the bottle is a dark purple glass which should help protect the oil from light.

There isn’t anything about this oil that I have a particular problem with except that it isn’t quite enough to deal with the driest areas of my face in the middle of winter. I don’t have any particular issues with it, it just didn’t stop all of the flaking I’ve been experiencing. For someone with slightly oilier skin, I think this product would likely work wonders in helping to balance everything out. All said and done, this is one of those products that I will definitely try again in the summer to see if I have better results.

Yes to Blueberries: Age Refresh Face and Neck Oil
After the issues I wrote above about fragrance, you’re going to find that it’s a theme with almost all of these oils. The Yes to Blueberries Age Refresh Face and Neck Oil uses what I think smells like a natural citrus extract to make the formula appealing in scent. I don’t mind it; it didn’t cause any irritation or break outs.

This is the only drugstore oil formulated specifically for the face that I tried, and for the price– it is a wonderful addition to my skincare routine. Only a drop or two is needed to cover the entire face/neck area and it absorbs relatively quickly. The bottle it comes in has a dropper and the glass bottle itself is blue, which is good because the blue should help light from disrupting the oil. It definitely helped out with the dryness I’ve been experiencing and after a few nights, I no longer had visible flakes on my cheeks in the morning.

However, I will say that this oil seems pretty heavy duty. I’m not sure how else to put it, except that my intuition tells me that this product may be too much come the warmer months. If that proves to be true, I have no problem keeping this product for the cold months only, as switching up my skincare routine with the seasons is my norm. However, for mature or especially dry skin– I think, given the price, this product is worth trying no matter the time of year.

fresh: Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil

Hands down, this is my favorite face oil of the four. It works well enough to tame the dryness on my cheeks and balance out my T zone at the same time. It does have a fragrance that smells sort of medicinal, almost herby, which I don’t mind, and doesn’t irritate my skin at all. In fact, this oil feels soothing. It absorbs quickly and keeps my skin from flaking after my morning rinse. Also, the bottle is slightly darkened to protect the oil from light and comes with a handy dropper.

This has turned out to be one of those products that I look forward to using. It actually makes me want to start my nighttime skincare routine earlier and earlier just so I can apply it. Perfect. This is exactly what I was looking for in a face oil.

If you have any questions about any of the oils I listed above, or a recommendations, leave me a comment. Thanks for reading!

Review: The Body Shop — Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask

the body shop seaweed ionic clay mask

The Body Shop Vitamin E Sink-In Moisture Mask and the Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask

It’s been years since I last bought a clay face mask until picking up a few single-use packets of The Body Shop’s Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask a couple of months ago at Ulta. I also picked up a couple of other single-use masks while I was there. The Vitamin E Sink-In Moisture Mask, pictured above, was intended for me, as my cheeks are flaking dry and the clay mask was for someone who mentioned to me that they were dealing with blackheads around their nose.

Upfront, I did like the Vitamin E Sink-In Moisture Mask but forgot all about it once I saw what my friend’s pores looked like after using the Seaweed Iconic Clay Mask. The difference was visible; I couldn’t stop staring. After wearing the mask for 15 minutes (as directed on the packaging), my friend’s pores were significantly clearer to the naked eye– which made the pores themselves seem smaller than before applying the mask.

I couldn’t believe it. I still sort of don’t believe it.

2014 Recap: Non-Beauty Favorites

Woodland Birds Tea Carafe from World Market

Woodland Birds Tea Carafe from World Market

I first posted about these glass tea carafes a few months ago. Since then, I’ve bought the one pictured above and have gotten an enormous amount of compliments on it. People actually stop me on the street when I’m carrying it to get a closer look.

Not only smart looking, I use this carafe daily for more than tea because it’s insulated, so nothing is ever too hot to hold or so cold that it sweats. It also fits 8 ounces of liquid inside comfortably, making the carafe the perfect “cup” measurement, and it’s thankfully dishwasher safe. Though durable, I would recommend these for adults only. While the glass is thick, I’ve shattered one by dropping it on concrete.

Cucumber Water in a 1 Liter Glass Carafe with Plastic Lid from World Market

Cucumber Water in a 1 Liter Glass Carafe with Plastic Lid from World Market

Speaking of hydration, I’ve needed a lot of liquids in the last half year. The summer heat where I live is no joke; in fact, it proves itself rather dangerous every year. Plus, I spent most of my fall/early winter down with a nasty virus. When I feel like I need a little extra hydration, I slice up a cucumber and add it to a 1-liter glass carafe of water (I couldn’t find the carafe with the plastic lid online, only the carafe). Cucumber is my favorite fruit, and aside from containing needed vitamins and acids– it is also quite hydrating.

Casabella Microfiber Filament Duster from Target

Casabella Microfiber Filament Duster from Target

I hate dusting and I especially hate using chemicals to make dust adhere to whatever item I happen to be dragging around the house while cleaning. I found this microfiber wand at Target in early 2014 and have bought an additional two to keep around the house. Being microfiber, the dust sticks to the material instead of being disrupted directly into the air.

The microfiber cloth itself can be easily cleaned in the washing machine, though I recommend letting it air dry and skipping fabric softener. I actually add a small amount of white vinegar to the water in place of detergent. Perfect. It’s reusable, doesn’t require a chemical spray and does the job quickly!

iPhone Six Plus from Apple

iPhone Six Plus from Apple

I don’t know if I want to talk about this; I have a really complicated relationship with Apple. However, the iPhone Six Plus gets no complaints from me. Mine was delivered in October and I became uncomfortably attached to it within days. While I know some people feel that the Six Plus is just way too big, it works for me. I rarely used my previous iPhone to surf or take notes or photos or anything really. The Six Plus is large enough to make doing all of the aforementioned things a snap and because I carry a purse– lugging it around is zero trouble.

G.H. Bass Whitney II Ballet Flat

G.H. Bass Whitney II Ballet Flat

Comfortable, sassy wing-tipped ballets flats …I’m not sure what else to say. These shoes are lookers and easy on the feet. I get a lot of wear out of them at work with slacks as well as with jeans. As I mentioned I might, in my initial review, I went up half a size. Other than that, I am sad to say that these shoes are only available sporadically at G.H. Bass & Co. I’d love to see these shoes released again in 2015, and in multiple colors options. Maybe in gray and white, or maple brown and burgundy, please?
