Movie Review: Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom poster

This weekend I had the enjoyment of going to see a film by Wes Anderson called Moonrise Kingdom.  The film was based in the 1960’s with characters played by some major Hollywood hitters such as Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton.  Wes Anderson is known for his quirky and charming style of directing, and in Moonrise Kingdom, quirk and charm were ever present.  I must say, the kids who were the main characters did an outstanding job of performing what I imagine to be Anderson’s vision for the film. Adie’s Summer Trunk Essentials!

Summer is here, and let me tell you, I am excited! What’s less exciting? The state of my car’s trunk is not only unexciting– it might also be a little bit of a mess. And I’ve saved the glorious task of cleaning out my trunk for a day when I felt like I could get nothing else done. Well, that day has officially arrived.  As a reward for a job well done, I’m going to outfit my trunk with seasonal essentials for maximum summer fun.

So, here it is: Adie’s Trunk Prep for Summer Fun!

  1. A bathing suit. Now I won’t have to sit idly by this summer, baking in the heat, while my friends and family bask in a glorious body of cool, relaxing water.
  2. Light-weight chairs. I have two of these little chairs that collapse into nearly nothing and weigh even less. The chairs definitely come in handy during summer outings and I never forget them since they’re packed away in my trunk. Continue reading

Review: Products to help deal with keratosis pilaris

Neutrogena’s Body Clear Body Wash with Salicylic Acid and a sisal sponge from World Market

For those of us who suffer from keratosis pilaris, it’s often an annoying but thankfully benign condition. If a blocked follicle happens to produce an ingrown hair, then it can become a bit more complicated. I don’t have an issue with ingrown hairs myself, but I do have intermittent issues with keratosis pilaris on my legs. I’ve tried a number of solutions, such as prescription and over-the-counter lotions. Alas, none of these products worked very well for me. Eventually, through trial and error, I found that a combination of manual and chemical exfoliation was what I needed to keep my skin free of red bumps.

Review: Boots Expert and Thayer’s Peach Witch Hazel

I have sensitive skin.  Wait, let me be a little more clear; I have super sensitive skin.  Anything and everything can irritate my skin, especially products and makeup.  I’ve used Cetaphil, which is a great product since it’s made for very sensitive skin, but I wanted to try something that would give me more of a deeper clean without making my face peel like after a bad sunburn.  The attempt to find a product that wouldn’t harm me was definitely an undertaking.  About a year ago, I tried a product that wreaked havoc on myskin.  I’m not talking about a little redness with dry areas.  When I say havoc, I mean HAVOC!  After using the product for three days, I woke up with swollen eyes and burning skin.  I was advised by some lovely nurses who were friends of mine to immediately toss the product into the deep sea and apply hydrocortisone gel and take something for the inflammation.  I’m telling you, it was bad.  The advice worked and my skin recovered.  I swore I would never branch out again to any other line of skin care that wasn’t approved for sensitive skin.  Recently on a trip to Target, I came across Boots Expert SensitiveGentle Cleansing Wash, and at around $6, I gave it a shot.  The results?  My skin felt cleansed but not dry or irritated, the wash doesn’t strip your skin of the natural oils, but still leaves you with a clean feeling.  My skin approved and now I’m on my second bottle.  I’ll be using this stuff for awhile!
