Personal Rituals: Adie Knits a Scarf

We all have rituals that give our lives a greater sense of depth, even if they may seem meaningless to the world around us. Because rituals seem to be more and more subjective, at times completely removed from the traditional ideas of sacred or profane, they seem to possess a pleasant sort of plasticity these days. Over time– some rituals grow and others shrink, and many are abandoned completely to make room for new practices.

And when I use the word ritual—it’s conceptualized in the healthiest sense as the routine things we do that bring us enjoyment, reflection, restoration.

Review: Moom Hair Removal Kit

Moom Organic Hair Removal Kit with Lavender

I was born with a rather serious set of eyebrows, so I started waxing in the eighth grade and I’ve been doing it ever since. But then, I moved hours away from my esthetician and had to figure something out quick. It can be hard to trust someone with waxing any area of your body, especially your face. When performed improperly, waxing can lift and/or burn the skin. It can also cause scarring, not to mention leave you with uneven or overly-thinned brows.

I found a solution that’s worked well for the last year from Moom Spa. It’s a sugaring hair removal kit that does the job safely and quickly at home. I bought my kit from Ulta, but it can also be purchased online directly from Moom. The kit comes with a sugaring paste that can be heated in the microwave, along with reusable strips and wooden applicators. The strips and applicators both come in two sizes and are easy to clean. There is also a video available on the Moom web site, which explains how the product works while also demonstrating how to get the best results. If you’ve never tried this before, I highly suggest watching the video so that you can observe the technique before trying it yourself.

One of the advantages to sugaring your own brows, lip or legs, is that it is a lot less expensive. I paid roughly $17 for my kit and that’s nearly half the cost of one of my eyebrow waxing treatments. And because my brows have been waxed every three weeks, for a good number of years, they are already shaped. If I do happen to make a mistake applying the sugaring paste, I can wash it off– something that is much more difficult to do with wax. And I’m careful to test the heat of the sugar paste before applying it, so I haven’t experienced any lifting or burning.

My own tips:

1. If you use retinol products or the like (alpha or beta hydroxy acids, for example), you need to take precautions with hair removal and it is best to speak with an expert before making any attempts yourself. And I’m serious about this because certain products will thin the skin and make lifting/scarring a very real concern. I use an AHA serum myself but stop applying it three days before sugaring and then one day after. Since everyone is different, it’s better to err on the side of caution than lift your skin. In all my years of waxing, my skin has only lifted once and I was thankfully left scar-free thanks to my esthetician’s skill and a tube of Mederma.

2. Because skin is quite delicate after sugaring or waxing, I apply a mixture of tea tree and lavender oils when I’m done. Tea tree oil is known to have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, which is great. Lavender is not only antiseptic, it also soothes the skin and is often used to ease bumps after hair removal.

Yoga: Excessive Sweating

My tip: a Yoga towel (by Manduka) is what I use to keep my sweat-slick hands from slipping in downward-facing dog. Yoga hack: a plain, old microfiber towel also works.

People have been asking lately: do you sweat a lot during your Yoga practice? You may have heard that excessive sweating during Yoga can be linked to a poor fitness level or the quality of your breathing. Excessive sweating can also indicate an underlying medical issue. So, if you find yourself sweating more than you feel comfortable with, for the sake of your own health– none of these causes should be overlooked. However, some of us just plain sweat when we engage in any form of exercise. I happen to come from a long line of people who literally drip with sweat every time they work out.

First off, I’m assuming that you’re one of those people, too, since you’re reading this post. And I’ll admit that what feels like excessive sweating during your Yoga practice can be a little uncomfortable in the beginning. But if you’ve ruled out your fitness level, pranayama, or an underlying medical issue as the cause – it’s time to start seeing your propensity to sweat as a blessing.

How can making puddles on your mat be a blessing? And what can you do when slipping becomes an issue?  Continue reading

Adie’s Five Early Fall Favorites Under $20

1. Candles – World Market Mexican Pumpkin Candle $4.99-19.99

With autumn right around the corner, or at least just a few weeks away, I love to fill my house with fragrances that will helped get me excited for the season. I already spend an embarrassing amount of time at World Market, so it was easy to grab one of their candles during my last jaunt through their aisles. And I am not disappointed. The Mexican Pumpkin scented candle is delicious, and it comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. One of the things that I like best about this candle is that I can often catch a whiff of it in the air, even when it isn’t lit. Bonus!

2. LPLP Linea Pelle Wristlet for Target $19.99 in Orange

I love when Target collaborates with designers, and this wristlet is a perfect example as to why I anticipate such collections months in advance. This wristlet works for me on days when I don’t feel like lugging around my bag, and it comes with a strap that you can sling over your shoulder or wear across your body so that your hands can be free at all times.

3. Essie Nail Polish in Sew Psyched $8 at Essie.com or local carrier

I actually picked this color up last year, I believe, in Essie’s 2011 Fall Collection and it’s been a favorite ever since. Or maybe it was 2010? Either way, the color is fantastic. The olive/mossy-green works great with my skin tone and provides a refreshing blast of color that is muted enough that I feel comfortable wearing it in all situations.

4. Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange Body Butter on sale at Sephora $3

I carry this body butter in my purse with me because the fragrance is like a blast of happiness, and my skin really needs help when the temperatures begin to cool. As a chronic hand washer, the change in weather mixed with multiple trips to the sink everyday certainly requires me to moisturize more frequently. It also works in a pinch for elbows or any other areas that you might have forgotten in the morning but is still small enough to fit in your bag.

5. Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Voluptuous Violet $16

As with my hands, my lips also suffer come September. This year, I’ve been thrilled to find Clinique’s chubby sticks back in my local stores. Their sheer purplish-berry colors suit my skin tone very well and these sticks offer the right amount of color in a moisturizing balm that is easy to toss in my purse.

Review Update: Three Months of M2 Skin Refinish Serum

M2 Skin Refinish, 12 percent.

This post is to update my progress with the M2 Skin Refinish Serum. My tips for usage can be found here, along with my pervious experiences. As I wrote in June, I’d been dealing with some less than fun breakouts as the temperature began to rise. Thus, I was also dealing with the hyperpigmentation such breakouts leave behind. Because it’s not bad enough to have a painful little pimple on your face, is it? No, that pimple usually insists on leaving its mark for a few months at least. The nerve, right? So, I wanted to update those interested in my first review with a follow up, to explain what a few months of using the product has done for my skin.
