Sonia Kashuk Haul – 15th Anniversary Fall Lip Palette, Liquid Line Precision Marker, No. 27 Angled Brush

Up front, I am a sucker for lip palettes. One of my most vivid memories is of watching my grandmother touch up her lipstick after dinner by mixing together colors from a palette that she always kept tucked inside her purse. It seemed terribly sophisticated and the entire ritual fascinated me. As an adult, I now find myself drawn to palettes for three reasons: 1) they usually have a slot for a lipstick brush which is great because an accurate, precise brush application usually means that there is no need for lipliner; 2) Palettes provide the ability to mix colors together easily and; 3) There is something that makes me feel extra grown up about the whole thing.

I saw this Sonia Kashuk palette yesterday at Target and spent about 4 minutes staring at it before putting it back on the shelf. Today, I went back and bought it because I couldn’t stop thinking about the colors.

The case is reflective, gold-toned, and I’m a little concerned how it will stand up both in my purse and makeup bag. However, I do love the packaging and the interior mirror is a generous size.

The colors themselves are beautiful. There are five different shades of red inside and a lot of fantastic possibilities for mixing up the perfect red for any event. I’m not quite sure about the shape or quality of the lip brush and admit that I will likely use my Mac 316 mini brush from a different palette in its place.

And while scooting around Target, I also picked up two more Sonia Kashuk products.

So far, I really like the Liquid Line Precision Marker. I didn’t notice any flaking, which drives me up the wall, or fading and the application was easy and smooth.

I also grabbed a new eye liner brush for the days when I prefer gel or shadow liner after leaving my previous one in a hotel bathroom somewhere across the country. This isn’t my first Sonia Kashuk brush but the ones I already own are almost all blending brushes of some sort.

I like that the brush is synthetic and that the bristles are firm with just enough give. The shape of the brush is interesting too and was comfortable during application.

All in all, I am pretty happy with my Sonia Kashuk haul. So happy that I might go back to Target and look at some of the 15th Anniversary brush sets. I’ll let you know if I do!

Recipe: Fresh Blackberry Cobbler

Ingredients:

Filling
6 packages of blackberries (12 oz.)
1/4 cup tapioca
3/4 cup raw sugar (+ 1 tablespoon for sprinkling)
1/2 cup bourbon (optional)

Crust
 1 cup flour
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 cup ice-cold water
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions: Preheat oven to 375F and then wash berries. Once the berries are dry, lay them out in a 9×13 pan. Sprinkle with tapioca and then sugar. Begin to prepare the crust by combining the flour, shortening, water, baking powder and salt. Mix well until doughy, but avoid overworking so that the dough keeps its elasticity. Pinch pieces off and drop them onto the berries. Continue until crust covers the fruit. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon sugar and then place the cobbler into the oven.

Bake for 1.5 hours or until the cobbler is bubbling with a golden-brown crust.

Recipe: Cinnamon Cake with Icing

Cinnamon Cake with Icing (or muffins)
Makes: 12 muffins or 9-inch cake

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups flour
½ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup milk
½ cup canola oil
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg, beaten

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350F degrees, and then sift together flour, sugar, brown sugar, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon in a large bowl.

Next combine beaten egg, milk, oil and vanilla extract in a medium bowl, and then add to dry ingredients. Stir just enough to moisten. Really! You don’t want to overwork this batter. The less you fuss with it, the fluffier the cake or muffins will be.

At this point you can either make individual muffins or a 9-inch cake. For muffins, fill tins 2/3 full or place batter into a 9-inch cake pan. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes clean from the center.

For optional icing, combine 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and 2-3 tablespoons of milk. You can add more or less milk depending on what consistency you like best.

This has made for a delicious morning treat with a cup of steaming coffee over the winter. But let’s be honest, I’m not picky about what time I eat cake or muffins. Thanks for reading, and if you have any recipes to share, leave them in the comments!

Adie Attempts: No Knead Bread Recipe

I’ve been wanting to learn to make my own bread for a while now but never had interest in buying a bread maker or other additional tools—because I feared that I might only make bread once. Then I came across this no-knead bread recipe that uses a traditional dutch oven for baking, and finally got around to trying it out! I have to admit that the post at Steamy Kitchen sold me because if a four-year old can make bread—I figured that I could probably pull it off, too.

I’m sorry I didn’t try it sooner! The bread is delicious with an amazing texture—crunchy on the outside, soft in the center. * I did substitute 1 cup of bread flour with whole wheat flour, but it came out just fine. Check out the recipe here.
