I don’t think I’ve ever really blogged much about haircare before; my hair has mostly been easy to deal with and I’ve always been careful to avoid applying much heat and only recently started coloring my hair again. Blah, blah blah.
Yet I started having real trouble with my hair and it seemed like it came out of nowhere. My hair became stripped over the course of a few months no matter how much of my fancy, expensive-organic-no-yucky-chemicals conditioner I applied. My hair was dry, had lost its shine, and the cuticle appeared to be mysteriously damaged. To be honest, I avoided my hair stylist/colorist for a while simply because I was terrified of causing more damage! Two months ago, I bucked up and went in for what I thought would be a drastic cut to my highly damaged hair. Indeed, she took one look at my hair, washed and conditioned it, and then trimmed a mere 1/4 inch off the ends. What? By some miracle, she had returned my hair to its prior state! My hair was normal again. It was shiny and looked healthy.
And this was the wisdom she passed along: “You need a new conditioner.”
No. Surely, you jest. How dare you speak like that about my expensive, awesome fair-trade, anti-oxidant-packed conditioner?
The next time I washed my hair, I skipped conditioner altogether to test her theory. Ugh. She was totally right. My hair was completely fine though sightly more tangled and not as a nice as it would be with a decent conditioner. So. My stupidly expensive natural conditioner was in fact awful for my hair.
Jaded from spending so much on conditioner for such bad results, I head to Target. I grabbed the first bottle that I thought looked interesting and checked out the fragrance. It smelled exactly like gardenias, which I absolutely adore, and I reasoned that there was no way this gorgeous orange bottle would betray me. Short story: it didn’t. I’m on my second bottle now and after what the last conditioner put me through– I am over the moon. It only takes an incredibly small amount each use and the scent does last after the conditioner is rinsed out. This may or may not be a good thing depending on sensitivities. For me, it restored shine and manageability to my hair and that was more than enough.
The last time I picked up new a bottle of conditioner, I also decided to try to the replenishing oil. I don’t use oil on my hair very often but there are definitely times when my hair feels a bit dry. This oil works, smoothing and shining up hair, without weighing it down. It isn’t greasy at all and absorbs quickly. I use two pumps, rubbing it between my palms before rubbing it into the bottom half of my hair, focusing on the ends.
Since switching up my conditioning routine, I’ve been loving my Sonia Kashuk Bristle Hairbrush. This brush can really help hair to shine and its great for styling loose curls.
Tip: When I get ready for a night out or a special occasion, I do like to add a small drop of gardenia essential oil to the replenishing oil. I really do love the scent of gardenia though you could use any scented oil you prefer.
